How To Fix Dryer Vent Hose Falls Off Or is Loose

The Purpose Of A Dryer Vent Hose

A dryer vent hose (or flex transition hose) moves the hot exhaust air from the dryer through the hose and expels it to the outside of your house or apartment. If either side of the vent hose falls off (vent hose on dryer side or vent hose on wall side) the hot air exhaust will fill the room and lint may be noticeable on the floor. Without a vent hose attached to your dryer, lint can build up in your clothes dryer over time and cause efficiency and safety issues.

How do you fix a dryer vent hose that keeps falling off? The vent hose on the back of my dryer falls off. When the hose disconnects I get lint all over the floor and it gets hot in my laundry room. The dryer hose is a flexible type of tube and keeps disconnecting from the wall. What is the best way step-by-step to reattach the dryer vent hose?

Best Type Of Dryer Vent Hose

How To Reattach/Connect A Dryer Vent Hose:

1. Gently slide the dryer out from the wall to access the electrical cord and or flexible gas line.
2. Remove electrical power. If you have a gas dryer use caution – Turn off the gas using the shut off valve and remove the flexible gas line ONLY IF APPLICABLE IN YOUR SITUATION. (If you can get behind the dryer without disconnecting the gas line, do not disconnect the gas line)
3. Use a flashlight and go behind the dryer to find out which end of the vent hose has come off.
4. The disconnected vent tube should be visible and the loose or disconnected end will probably have the hose clamp still attached.
5. Check that the vent hose, clamps, and tubes are not damaged, if damaged, replace before continuing.
6. Slide the hose clamp on the vent hose and reattach it to the circular exhaust pipe that has disconnected (either wall or dryer).
7. Correctly position the hose clamp on the vent hose which is usually 3/4 inch from the open end.
8. Once the vent hose and the clamp are in the correct position tighten it securely.
9. Once you have secured the vent hose in place, pull slightly on the hose to be sure it will not slip off again. If it slips off, simply reposition and retighten.
10. Once the vent hose is secure, reconnect electrical power. If you have a gas dryer use caution – If applicable, reconnect the gas line and turn the gas back ON using the shut off valve.
11. Gently slide the dryer back into position while trying not to compress or bend the vent hose.
12. Run a dryer test load to be sure the dryer vent hose is secure and that all functions of the dryer work correctly.
13. If no issues are found such as the room is not heating up and no lint is found on the floor, the vent hose is attached properly.
14. If the dryer still has issues after reconnecting the hose, see below…

NOTICE: If you have a GAS dryer, use extra caution when sliding out the dryer from the wall. If unsure of the complete process after reading this article, call a professional.

Dryer Vent Hose Connection Problems, Tips, and Help:

– When reattaching the dryer vent hose, be sure it is not damaged or ripped. Also check the hose clamps that secure the vent hose to the circular exhaust pipe for damage. If the parts are found to be damaged you will need to purchase a new dryer vent hose and new hose clamps before trying to fix the loose connection. A new dryer vent hose with clamps are available as a kit with different vent hose lengths to fit your situation. See below for dryer vent hose kits with clamps…

dryer vent hose not attached to wall

– If the vent hose is in good condition but keeps falling off, check that the vent hose clamp is not loose. Some hose clamp types have a screw or nut for tightening. If the hose clamp is not tightened properly when connecting to either the wall or the dryer circular exhaust pipe, it will fall off and the hot exhaust and lint will fill the room.

– A short dryer vent hose may be your issue. If the vent hose is too short, then just moving the dryer out a few inches could cause it to detach. If you find that this is your issue, purchase a longer vent hose to avoid issues in the future. See above for dryer vent hose kits.

– If you slide your dryer out from the wall in a tight place for any reason, you may be unknowingly disconnecting the vent hose. Use extreme care when moving the dryer away from the wall. If your dryer is gas, use caution to not forcefully pull on the gas line.

– Dryer vent tubes work most efficient when there are gentle bends instead of sharp bends. The air flow is impeded if a sharp bend is present. Try to keep the vent hose as straight as possible to allow proper air flow.

Why does my dryer hose keep falling off?

Most likely the dryer hose keeps falling off because it is not secured properly. Be sure the hose clamp is in the correct placement and is secured. If any damage is found with the hose clamps or the vent hose, replace them as soon as possible.
