refrigerator constantly running but not cooling

Troubleshooting Guide: LG Refrigerator Running All The Time

A refrigerator that runs constantly is a warning that something is amiss. Why is my LG refrigerator running all the time? When it’s overfilled or not full enough, the refrigerator must work constantly to keep cool. When your refrigerator never stops running, try these troubleshooting tips to prevent bigger problems.

LG Refrigerator Running All The Time?
Try This DIY Fix.

An LG refrigerator running all the time is a cry for help that should be quickly answered. Constant running can lead to cooling issues, decreased efficiency and higher utility and repair costs. Fortunately, these serious problems can be prevented with some simple DIY fixes.

Refrigerator Temperature is Too High

When your refrigerator runs all the time, first check its temperature setting. If the temperature is set too high, the refrigerator will run constantly in an effort to keep cool. For optimum cooling that doesn’t overwork the refrigerator, LG recommends a temperature setting of 37℉ for the refrigerator and 0℉ for the freezer.

The temperature for the refrigerator and freezer can be raised or lowered via individual temperature buttons on the refrigerator’s digital control panel.

Refrigerator Too Full Or Too Empty

Should a refrigerator run all the time? Not if it’s stocked properly. When the refrigerator is filled with too many items, there’s little room for cool air to circulate. This increases the internal temperature, making the refrigerator run all the time to stay cool.

However, don’t empty out your fridge completely. Cold containers and foods can help it maintain its temperature, while an empty fridge must work harder to stay cold. What’s the right stocking solution? Always leave some space between items for air to circulate. Aim to keep the refrigerator ¾ of the way full to aid in cooling without overworking the compressor and other components.

LG Condenser Coils Are Dirty

If your LG refrigerator isn’t cooling properly in addition to running constantly, the condenser coils may need a cleaning. These coils help dissipate heat from flowing refrigerant, producing cool air for the refrigerator. If they’re dirty with dust and debris, the coils may not sufficiently cool the refrigerant. When this happens, you’ll find your refrigerator constantly running but not cooling.

Fortunately, cleaning the coils is a relatively easy way to fix an LG refrigerator running all the time. Regular coil cleanings every 6-12 months can also prevent the buildup of debris that causes constant running and warming temperatures.

Follow these steps to perform an LG refrigerator coil cleaning:

  1. Turn off the refrigerator’s power.
  2. Move the refrigerator away from the wall to access the coils on the bottom of the rear side.
  3. With a narrow hose vacuum attachment, vacuum the condenser cover and coil vents to remove dust and debris. Vacuum up any dirt and dust on the floor as well.
  4. Reposition the refrigerator and restore its power.
  5. For coils that are significantly dirty, LG recommends that a professional service perform the cleaning process.

Door Gaskets Are Dirty Or Damaged

Lastly, a refrigerator running for a long time may be due to a dirty or damaged door gasket. This rubber gasket creates a tight seal when the door is closed, preventing warm air from entering and keeping cold air contained. If the gasket is dirty or damaged the escaping cold air results in an LG refrigerator running all the time to stay cool.

A dirty gasket can be cleaned with a damp cloth to remove grease, food particles and residue that compromise its seal. However, a gasket that is loose, ripped or torn should be replaced. Contact your professional LG appliance repair service for refrigerator door gasket replacement.
